Pregnancy and Post-natal massage

From the moment you choose to conceive, throughout your pregnancy and during the time after your pregnancy when your body is recovering, massage can provide many benefits.

Pregnancy massage

Pregnancy is a tremendous time of change and massage is a wonderful support for pregnant women, providing calming relaxation and helping to soothe many of the pregnancy-related physical discomforts. A specialist pregnancy massage can help you at all stages throughout your pregnancy. It is important that any massage you receive while you are pregnant is provided by a massage therapist specifically trained in massage for pregnancy.

Emma Danchin, our Senior Massage Therapist, has experience as both a mother and a massage therapist. She would be more than happy to discuss any concerns or questions you might with regard to massages during pregnancy. Some of the benefits are explained below. Emma is also a Shiatsu therapist and can provide specialised Shiatsu for pregnancy.

First trimester

In the first trimester, a pregnancy massage can alleviate nausea, fatigue and anxiety whilst your body harnesses all its energy to create a new being. For first time mums-to-be, the first trimester can be particularly stressful as you less certain of what to expect. Remaining calm and learning to relax is beneficial to you and your baby.

Second trimester

In the second trimester we begin to use the special pregnancy massage pillow so you can lie face down with your belly fully supported.  This way, your massage can continue as required, assisting you to accomodate the changes you are experiencing and giving you time out from your busy schedule.

 Third trimester

In the third trimester, discomfort is common from compensation for the growing baby; massage can relieve over-active muscles, stimulate circulation that may become sluggish in arms & legs and calm the mind, regulating sleep patterns and allowing space to connect with the baby within. Learning to breathe and relax will optimally prepare you for labour.

Post-natal massage

Post-natally, massage can relieve your tight & sore back, shoulders & neck from breastfeeding and give guidance on restoring the body's strength and balance.
